Terai Duar Savanna and Grasslands of Nepal

The Terai Duar Savanna and Grasslands is shared by Nepal and India. On the Nepalese side of the border the savannas and grasslands stretch from Bhutan to Banke, as well as along the Deukhuri Valley at the foot of the Himalayas. It is a region that is well protected, as it is home to extremely rare and endangered wildlife, and its diverse habitats have created a significant ecoregion that is vital to the survival of many species.

Ghodaghodi Tal: An Important Ramsar Site

Designated as a Ramsar site in August 2003, Ghodaghodi Tal is located on the slopes of the Siwalik Hills in the Kailali District of Nepal. The forests and wetlands of this conservation site serve as a corridor for wildlife between the Siwalik Hills and the picturesque Terai lowland. The area is surrounded by patches of forest and includes a number of shallow oxbow lakes, with a multitude of ponds, marshes, wide open meadows and streams. It is in this idyllic setting that some of Nepal’s vulnerable and critically endangered species are found. These include the majestic Bengal tiger, marsh crocodile, red-crowned roofed turtle, three-striped roofed turtle, Eurasian otter, smooth-coated otter, swamp deer and lesser adjutant stork.

Yamori Punhi Festival

Nepal is a country rich with tradition and festivals that are celebrated throughout the year. Religious festivals are a common sight, but there also harvest festivals, of which Yamori Punhi is one of the most well known celebrations of the year. It is hosted by the local community of the Kathmandu Valley, and is a festival that pays tribute to the grain goddess, Annapurna. It is believed that worshipping Annapurna will ensure a productive future rice harvest, and festival participants also thank her for the harvest enjoyed in the previous season.

Open-Sourcing Global Development Aid workers have just gained a whole new approach to their important work in developing countries. In a recent article in the widely regarded biomedical journal PLoS Medicine, physicians and epidemiologists from Harvard, Yale, and UCSF, affiliated with the non-profit organization Nyaya Health, have detailed several web-based tools for improving data sharing, performance monitoring, and collaboration. Some might call it "open-source development"; the authors call it "Global Health Delivery 2.0".
