Trekking the Tamang Heritage Trail

With its spectacular scenery, rich biodiversity and fascinating culture, Nepal is a popular holiday destination, and there is no better way to experience this mountainous country than on foot. Trekking enthusiasts travel from far and wide to enjoy this experience and there are a range of trekking routes to choose from. One of the newer trekking routes is the Tamang Heritage Trail in the Langtang region of Nepal, which offers breathtaking mountain views as it makes its way through alpine terrain, lush green meadows and colorful rhododendron forests. It also offers the opportunity to closely observe the Tamang community’s culture, lifestyle and the production of traditional crafts such as bamboo mats and baskets.

The eight-day Tamang Heritage Trail starts with an eight-hour journey from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi where trekkers stay overnight in the local hotel. The first leg of the trek takes about six hours, from Syabrubesi to Gatlang. The route passes through a Tamang village with terraced fields up the hillside and includes a visit to a local monastery. The following day, trekkers can enjoy some time in the natural hot springs of Tatopani – the perfect remedy for any aches and pains. The route opens up superb views of the Lantang range and majestic Ganesh Himal.

Day four takes trekkers from Tatopani to Thuman via Nagthali. In addition to enjoying the panoramic view, trekkers may come across local wildlife such as monkeys and deer. The night is spent at Thuman village, known for its ancient Shamanic practices. The following day the route from Thuman to Timure incorporates part of the old trade route between Nepal and Tibet with an old fort standing as a reminder of this. Trekkers will also get the opportunity to observe Tibeto Burman Tamang culture in the local villages en route.

Day six features a six-hour trek from Timure to Briddim where community members put on a cultural show for their visitors. Trekkers can interact with the villagers who are mostly the descendants of Tibetan immigrants going many generations back. On day seven of the Tamang Heritage Trail the route descends gently from Briddim to Syabrubesi through villages and past terraced agricultural fields. The eighth and final day of the trek is spent traveling back to Kathmandu from Syabrubesi, having enjoyed a memorable experience in the beautiful country of Nepal.
