Visit the Kapilvastu Museum near Lumbini

Museums offer travelers the opportunity to learn more about the history, traditions and culture of the area they are visiting, and in the Lumbini region of Nepal, the Kapilvastu Museum has a wealth of such information to share. Situated around 26km from the town of Lumbini – renowned for being the birthplace of Lord Buddha – one of the highlights of the Kapilvastu Museum is its extensive collection of artifacts from the Tilaurakot archeological site. This complex of buildings, established by the father of Lord Buddha, Shakya King Suddhodana, was where Lord Buddha spent his formative years before he set out on his quest for enlightenment. Excavated by a team of Nepali and Japanese archeologists, Tilaurakot is a major attraction in the area, particularly with pilgrims visiting Lumbini.

The Kapilvastu Museum details the history of the legendary Shakya dynasty, dating back to around 650 BC. Sinhana was the founder of the Shakya Dynasty, and he ruled for close to 50 years. His oldest son, Suddhodana was crowned in the year 600 BC and married Queen Maya, who became the mother of Prince Siddhartha. The prince's father, in an attempt to shield him from the harsh realities of the outside world, kept him within the palace grounds. But despite his father's best intentions, the prince saw an old man, a diseased man and a corpse, which prompted him to leave his sheltered life and search for true knowledge. Upon attaining enlightenment, Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha and shared his teachings with others.

Visitors to the Kapilvastu Museum will be able to view a collection of scriptures related to the Garden of Lumbini, including the Lumbini Canana, Lumbini, Cittalavana and Lumbini Vatica. Other displays include items of cultural and historical significance, such as terracotta figures, plaques, ornaments, pottery ware, furniture, coins, toys, and jewelry. Certainly, visitors to this picturesque region of Nepal should take some time to explore the Kapilvastu Museum.
