Celebrated for 15 days, Dashain is considered to be one of Nepal's most exciting festivals. This ten day festival includes masked dancing, kite flying and other traditional activities. The spiritual aspect of the festival includes ritual bathing in holy rivers. Dashain 2012 starts on October 16 with Ghatsthapana, followed by Fulpati October 21, Durga Ashtami October 22, Navami October 23 and Bijayadashami or Vijayadashami Tika October 24. Tika and Jamara continue until October 29.
The first six days of the festival are spent in private and family devotions with the last four days spent in public festivities, which start with a procession of government officials in Kathmandu. Festivities take place in Nepali communities around the world.
