The Hindu celebration of Hamuman Jayanti commemorates the birth of the monkey god Hanuman Ji who is worshipped for his total devotion to Lord Rama. In return for this total devotion it is said that Lord Rama granted Hanuman everlasting life.
The festival of Hanuman Jayanti can be celebrated individually, or as a group in a temple. Rituals include the reciting of the sacred text of Hanuman Chalisa, either a set number of times, or non-stop for 24 hours, depending on the choice of the devotee. Other rituals include fasting, followed by a feast, and colorful processions in which some people will wear masks and tails in imitation of the monkey god, or idols will be carried aloft during the procession.
