Description:
Mahashivratri is a Hindu holy day dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the deities of the divine Hindu trinity. The trinity consists of Brahma (the creator of the universe) Vishnu (the caretaker of the universe) and Shiva (the destroyer of the universe in order for it to be re-created). Because of his contradictory role as destroyer, but with the purpose of rebuilding, Shiva is viewed as being the source of both good and evil.
The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated during the night and day just prior to the new moon, and although each new moon is dedicated to Shiva, this particular festival is of special importance being the night when he danced his cosmic dance known as Tandav. It also celebrates the marriage of Chiva to Sati, the mother divine. Rituals include fasting, staying awake all night at a Hindu place of worship and offering special foods to Shiva.
