Description:
This celebration marks the birth of the founder of the Swaminarayan tradition, Lord Swaminarayan. Adherents to this Hindu tradition will spend the day offering food to images of Lord Swaminarayan in temples, while fasting, reflecting and offering acts of worship. At the end of the day worshippers will act out episodes of the founder's life, sing and listen to devotional talks.
At precisely 10h10 the arti ritual takes place to symbolise the propitious bird of Lord Swaminarayan. Festivities may continue for some time, with the fast being broken in the morning. Lord Swaminarayan was born in Northern India in 1781. He travelled throughout the country before settling in an ashram in Gujarat where he engaged in social and moral changes. He was 21 years old when he founded the Swaminarayan Sampradaya (denomination), where he promoted his doctrines and promised to remain with his followers through a succession of gurus.
