Taking place on the 13th night to 14th day in the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) of the Hindu calendar month of Maagha (eleventh month of the year), Maha Shivaratri is a festival honoring Lord Shiva.

Those celebrating Maha Shivaratri will fast all day and hold an all night vigil. Offerings of Bael leaves are offered to Lord Shiva and penances are performed. Adherents to the Hindu faith believe that the celebration came about when at the conclusion of creation, Parvati asked Lord Shiva which rituals were most pleasing to him, to which he replied the 13th night of the new moon during the month of Maagha.
