The nine-day Hindu festival of Navaratri begins on 19 September 2009 and is celebrated by most adherents of the Hindu faith all over the world - and Nepal is no exception. This festival takes place twice a year - at the start of summer and again when winter arrives.
The nine days of Navaratri is divided into three, allowing three days each to appreciate different aspects of the supreme goddess, the Divine Mother Durga. Firstly, the Mother is supplicated as a powerful force called Durga in which the worshippers impurities, vices and defects are destroyed. Secondly, the Mother is adored as she bestows spiritual wealth, known as Lakshmi. Thirdly, worshippers acknowledge the Mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati.
