While the sport may be one of the most expensive in the country, it is certainly gaining popularity at present. There are five golf courses in Nepal at the moment – each of them offering remarkably splendid holes and stunning scenery. Golf was brought to Nepal quite some time ago by a group of Rana ministers on their return from Scotland. It didn't take long for royals to see the challenge and enjoyment that are synonymous with the game and before long, the first golf course was built. The Royal Nepal Golf Course was built in 1829 and is the oldest in Nepal and one of the oldest in Asia. Some 91 years later in 1920, the first real golf tournament was held. The Lava Cup was such a success that it became a regular sporting feature. Thus the game grew and new courses where developed.
If you are planning to play a round or two whilst in Nepal, make sure that you visit between October and March. This is Nepal's dry season and is the best time to enjoy the sport. Most golfing visitors will head to the golf clubs in Kathmandu and Pokhara as these feature a absolutely breathtaking view of the Himalayas which can be enjoyed during play. Other options include playing in the Gokarna Forest where you can enjoy one of the finest golf courses in South Asia.
