Kathmandu, Nepal - Linnea Corn - Bodhnath Stupa [00:32]
September 2011 - Linnea Corn visiting the Bodhnath Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal. The site is dominated by a large whitewashed stupa with the all seeing eyes of Buddha on each side. Boudhanath is home to around 16000 Tibetan refugees. There are several beautiful Tibetan monasteries around the stupa and nearby. As dusk approached hundreds of Tibetans in traditional Tibetan cloths began their clockwise stroll around the stupa spinning the prayer wheels as they passed. There were several rooftop cafes and restaurants affording fantastic views of the shrine and surrounding countryside. A really beautiful and peaceful place, well worth a visit. Land a coin on the fountain for good luck!

Archaeological excavations at Mohenjodaro and Harappa in Pakistan prove that he was worshipped there in the second millennium BC. Pashupati is worshipped by Hindus from all over the world. In the beginning there may only have been a shrine there, but Pashupati had become a state deity by the seventh century. Dated sculptures and inscriptions proved that he worship place definitely existed by the fifth century. According to an old chronicle of Nepal, the temple was at once a five-story structure. The present two-story structure was built in the seventeenth century. The temple is square in shape. Many decorative and functional structures were added to it from time to time. Hindu shrines face specific directions for specific gods. Bhairav faces south, Ganesh faces east, Narayan west, and the Nawadurgar (the nine mother goddesses) north. The ...
