Helicopter Crash on Mountain a Russian MI-17 Crashes on Taking off from a Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, on May 28th 2003. An accident report on AERO News Network states -- "A Russian Mi-17 turbine helicopter, enroute to Base Camp with porters on their way to the 50th anniversary celebrations of Mount Everest's (29002 feet) first climb, crashed Wednesday with at least three fatalities and seven reported injuries/survivors. The Mi-17 was based in Kathmandu and chartered from Simrik Air. On board were five porters, a mountain guide and four crew members. The sight of parts flying about, shortly thereafter, occurs (apparently) at impact. Two of the dead were reported as mountain porter Phudorji Sherpa and cabin attendant Anup Dewan. An airport official claimed that, "The chopper left Kathmandu in the morning but because of bad weather it stopped at Lukla airport (in NE Nepal) for some time. It later proceeded to the Base Camp and crashed nearby." Among the injured was a German woman, who had the misfortune to be walking near Base Camp when the helicopter crashed. Take off from Lukla (Nepal) [02:03]
Our trekking group missed landing at this famous air strip as we came in on choppers due to the weather conditions but we did leave by plane. You can see another aircraft at ~0:20sec disappearing down the runway and @ ~0:42sec you get a quick glimpse down the runway prior to take off, note you can't actually see over the crest when the plane starts its run.
Chopper ride from Lukla ( most dangerous airport) [00:50]
Had to leave by a chopper from Lukla , Nepal as weather conditions were bad for a week . Lukla airport is also known as the Most dangerous airport in the world. It cost a bomb. Travellers to the Everest do be careful about this unexpected bombshell. My suggestion don't have connecting frights if ur travelling to Everest or get inputs on weather prior u start getting down to Lukla and book it at namche bazaar or online so u can save some $¥€ . The chopper ride is awesome though.

This is the largest number of summiteers on Mount Everest in an Indian expedition. The mighty mountain ranges of the Himalayas have, over the centuries, inspired not only man's imagination and spiritual quest, but also his spirit of adventure. Mount Everest, the tallest of the peaks of the Himalayas as also the whole world, stood in its unattainable isolation for thousands of years, till Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary conquered it in 1953. Since then, at least a thousand climbers have set foot on it. That at least 200 have lost their lives while trying to scale the peak speaks of the infinite dangers involved in the task. The Indian Army Mount Everest Expedition was flagged off by the Chief of the Army Staff on 1st March 2001 at New Delhi. It was led by Col. Krishan Kumar.
