Of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley (in Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur), this is the most well preserved. It takes less than an hour to get there from the centre of Kathmandu city and its worth the effort. Not only are the temples and palaces well preserved, the houses too are well kept. Its an open museum of traditional Nepali architectural style with finely carved windows and sloped roofs. You can also see potters and Thanka artists at work.
