Kathmandu is the capital and, with close to one million inhabitants, the largest metropolitan city of Nepal. The city is the urban core of the Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which contains two sister cities: Lalitpur (Patan), 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to its south and Bhaktapur or Bhadgaon, 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) to its east, and a number of smaller towns. It is also acronymed as 'KTM' and named 'tri-city'. In the last census (2001), the city of Kathmandu had 671846 inhabitants. Durbar square The literal meaning of Durbar Square is a place of palaces. The complex has 50 temples and is distributed in two quadrangles of the Durbar Square. The outer quadrangle has the Kasthamandap, Kumari Ghar and Shiva-Parvati Temple while the inner quadrangle has the Hanuman dhoka and the main palace. Hanuman Dhoka Temples at Hanuman DhokaHanuman Dhoka is a complex of structures with the Royal Palace of the Malla kings and also of the Shah dynasty. It is spread over five acres. The eastern wing with ten courtyards is the oldest part dated to the mid-16th century. It was expanded by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century with many temples. Sundari Chowk and Mohan Chowk in the north part of the palace are both closed. In 1768, in the southeast part of the palace, four lookout towers were added by Prithvi Narayan Shah. The legend of the living Goddess - La leyenda de la Diosa Viviente, Katmandú - Nepal [00:23]
De todas las excentricidades de la cultura nepalesa, ninguna se iguala a la de la Diosa Virgen Viviente de Katmandú que habita en uno de los palacios de la Plaza Durbar ya quien llaman Kumari. La leyenda comienza hace más de 1.000 años cuando una niña proclamó a viva voz estar poseída por el espíritu de la Diosa Virgen, consejera de las familias reales. El entonces rey, una vez convencido de que esa niña era la reencarnación de la Diosa Virgen, ordenó que le construyeran un templo especial en la Plaza Durbar: el Palacio Kumari Bahal. Desde entonces, esa ha sido la residencia de todas las Kumaris. La selección de la Kumari se realiza minuciosamente. Deben ser niñas de entre cuatro y cinco años y deben cumplir con 32 requisitos. Entre ellos, tener ojos y pelo negro, un cuerpo delgado, buena salud y la piel intacta. No pueden tener cicatrices porque nunca pueden haber sangrado. Y el horóscopo de esa niña debe armonizar con el del Rey. Como prueba final, la niña es encerrada en un cuarto oscuro y atormentada con cabezas de búfalo, velas y máscaras de demonios. Si la niña no se asusta es aclamada como la reencarnación de la Diosa Virgen. Se entiende que un niño que da síntomas de tanta valentía, necesariamente debe haber sido un ser superior en su vida anterior. Underneath this towering structure are a pair of all seeing eyes of Buddha painted on all four sides of the Stupa. The Stupa of Swayambhunath stands on a typically stylized lotus mandala base-a long time ago believed to have originated from a legendary lake of Kathmandu Valley.
