Episode 168: The Kangshung Face [36:43]
Third Side's A Charm. This morning Everest finally revealed her last secret as we were able to get a clear view of her East Side, the mysterious Kangshung Face. The weather was as clear as it could possible be and the white snow covering her flanks looked dazzling in contrast to the deep blue sky. We call this tallest mountain on the planet by three names. Westerners refer to her as Everest in honor of Sir George Everest, the British Surveyor General of India during the mid 19th century. In Nepal, she's officially called Sagarmatha which literally means "forehead of the ocean" but generally interpreted to mean "Goddess of the Sky". Interestingly enough,very few actually use Sagarmatha because the name was created by the Nepali government in the 1960s as a way to infer ownership over the peak. Ah, politics. In general, the local peoples surrounding the world's tallest mountain call her by the Tibetan name of Chomolungma or Qomolanma. Of course Chomolungma means different things to different people. Some believe it to mean "Goddess Mother of Snows" or "Highest Mountain". I've also heard that it means "Big Hen" as in a female chicken with it's feathers all puffed out. Luckily, the most adhered to definition of Chomolungma is "Mother Goddess of the Universe". Whether you call her Everest or Sagarmatha or Chomolungma, the tallest mountain in the world has 3 distinct sides (the South Face, North Face and East Face) and is therefore large enough to accommodate all of them. Von Besishara 800m geht es in 12 Tagen über den 5416m hohen Thorong la (tief verschneit nach einem Tag Schneefall) nach Jomosom. Trekkingzeit: Ende März, Anfang April 2011 Teil 4: Von Manang gehen wir in 2 Tagesetappen über Yak Karka nach Throng Phedi High camp. (2 Tagesetappen) The video lasts 1hr 40min divided to 9 parts. It presents the Annapurna Circuit, and the sightseeing points of Kathmandu. From Besishara 800m (2624 ft) in 12 days it goes over the 5416m (17769 ft) high Thorong la pass (deep snow after a day of snowfall) to Jomsom. Trekking time: late March, early April 2011 Part 4: From Manang we go in two stages via Yak Karka to Throng Phedi high-camp. (2 daily stages)
