मैले देखेको नेपाल!! ||.Maile Dekheko Nepal.|| [35:01]
Originally made for my grand-parents back home in Nepal but I also wanted to dedicate this video to all the Nepalese living abroad. Therefore, I cut-short the 70min film to just 35min. This was filmed during my 3-months stay in Nepal (June-August) in 2012. I moved around a lot indeed but here I managed to put-in together a hand-ful of clips I had taken and turn it into a non-narrative documentary. I hope you will enjoy the video. Thank you,, Places in the video: Nepalgunj, Kohalpur, Lamahi, Dang, Butwal, Palpa, Syangja, Pokhara, Damauli, Kathmandu, Narayangarh, Hetauda, Itahari, Dharan, Bhedetar, Birtamod, Ilam, Pashupatinagar, Goom, Darjeeling... Om Mane Padme Hum through prayer wheels! [01:18]
Om Mane Padme Hum through antique prayer wheels at the Swayambhunath temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. Also, images of Hindu deities... Did you know Nepal is the only largely-Hindu country in the world? A statue has vermillion and sandalwood paste or haldi (turmeric) smeared on it. Tibetan prayer (called Mani wheels by the Tibetans) are cylindrical devices for spreading spiritual blessings and well being. Rolls of thin paper, imprinted with many copies of the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, are wound around an axle in a protective container, and spun around and around. Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying this mantra, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. As the practitioner turns the wheel, it is best to focus the mind and repeat the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra. Not only does this increase the merit earned by the wheel's use but it is a mind stabilization technique that trains the mind while the body is in motion. The idea is said to have originated as a play on the phrase "turn the wheel of the dharma," a classical metaphor for Buddha's teaching activity. Episode 003: Kathmandu, Part 2 [23:50]
Om Mani Padme Hum. Major finally arrives and the Everest expedition continues. We check out the largest Stupa in Nepal: Boudhanath. I can't get over how amazing this place is. I just want to spend the day walking around and around the central spire (in a clockwise direction as is the custom) and stare up at the Eyes of Buddha. There's a sort of New Age rendition of "om mani padme hum" piped in on the loudspeakers that you can't escape and can't get out of your head when you leave. It's beautiful, but touristy, and I buy a CD of it anyway. The following day we set out early for a scenic flight along the Himalayas. It's a clear day and we get a very good view of Everest from the plane. The mountain is easy to spot...it's the tallest one in sight. As the plane flies over the Kathmandu Valley I catch a glimpse of a familiar place. It's Boudhanath Stupa in all of it's architectural glory. I bet that if the plane wasn't so loud we could probably hear the New Age music playing. When we return to the hotel from the flight, we meet up with Elizabeth Hawley. She's the author of the Himalayan Database and interviews someone from every expedition to the Himalayas. She may not be well known outside of the climbing world, but here in Kathmandu she's an institution. Ms. Hawley has been documenting climbs for over 40 years even though she's never climbed one herself. That evening I try to play my new CD and discover that it's blank! No matter, I still can't get the song out of my head ...
