Trekkers passing by [00:54]
The climatic conditions in the Sagarmatha region change without prior signs. The team gears up for the summit attempts as the weather clears up and the men set out for the top. There is no time to waste, it's a now or never situation as the teams climbing permit expires by the end of the month may 2001. Indian Army added another feather to its cap in May 2001, when its mountaineers successfully scaled Mount Everest and put a record eight members and seven Sherpas on the summit. This is the largest number of summiteers on Mount Everest in an Indian expedition. The mighty mountain ranges of the Himalayas have, over the centuries, inspired not only man's imagination and spiritual quest, but also his spirit of adventure. Mount Everest, the tallest of the peaks of the Himalayas as also the whole world, stood in its unattainable isolation for thousands of years, till Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary conquered it in 1953. Since then, at least a thousand climbers have set foot on it. That at least 200 have lost their lives while trying to scale the peak speaks of the infinite dangers involved in the task. The Indian Army Mount Everest Expedition was flagged off by the Chief of the Army Staff on 1st March 2001 at New Delhi. It was led by Col. Krishan Kumar. After flagging off, the team moved to Nepal and after a long trek from Jiri, reached Base Camp of Everest on 3rd April 2001. The stocking and establishment of various camps was completed by 10th May 2001 and summit attempts ...

Nepal Plane Crash Kills 15 [02:16]
A small plane owned by a private company crashed in northwest Nepal on Monday, killing 15 people including 13 Indians. The Dornier aircraft owned by private Agni Air company was carrying 18 passengers and a crew of three on a flight from the resort town of Pokhara to Jomsom when it crashed while landing at the mountain airstrip. Among those killed are 13 Indians and two Nepalis. Six survivors had been taken to a hospital in Pokhara and the condition of at least one of them is critical. Two Danish tourists were among those rescued. Jomsom, about 125 km (79 miles) northwest of Kathmandu, is a gateway for trekking in the region where Mount Annapurna, the world's 10th highest mountain, is located. In September last year, 19 people returning after viewing Mount Everest were killed when their plane crashed in bad weather near Kathmandu. It was not immediately clear what caused crash. Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest. Tens of thousands of hikers and foreign tourists go to Mount Everest and other trekking routes to see the lofty Himalayan peaks every year. Tourism, a key source of earning for impoverished Nepal, accounts for nearly four percent of the gross domestic product and employs tens of thousands of people. The bodies of 13 Indian pilgrims who died in a plane crash in northern Nepal will be handed over to their relatives on Tuesday after the process of postmortem is completed. The bodies were airlifted to Kathmandu on ...

Everest Trailer 1.mpg [02:16]
4 guys from Winnipeg, MB, trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp going through Namche Bazar, Gokyo Ri, and the Chola Pass. Mountainmen: from Prairies to Himalayas I do not own or take credit for the song "the Voiceless" by And So I Watched You From Afar. Special thank you to the wonderful people of Nepal who not only guided us but protected us from serious harm. This wouldn't have been possible without them.

How to descend from Meso Kanto La Pass (5100m) in Nepal: human sleigh [01:10]
Sliding down from the heights of Meso Kanto La Pass in Nepal after visiting Tilicho Lake: very steep snow slope, proved easier to descend on one's bottom than by carefully walking/slipping/sinking thigh-deep into snow... Marcus Sorensen is accompanied by the two sherpas Syange and Dorchi. At the bottom, they all changed into dry socks, and enjoyed the higher oxygen pressure in the air!

Recital at Tilicho Lake (4910m altitude) of "Tilicho Lake" by David Whyte [01:31]
Marcus Sorensen recites the poem "Tilicho Lake" by David Whyte in front of that same lake at 4910m altitude in Nepal. It is the world's highest lake, and frozen over for most of the year. It took 8 days' trekking to reach it with local sherpas. It is vast, at over 4km in length, and described by adventurer Maurice Herzog as "The Great Ice Lake", when he passed it on his way to do the first 8000m+ mountain climb in history at the nearby Annapurna Peak. Marcus was inspired to visit it to "see the true shape of [his] own face". With gratitude to Daphne Bouma-Jansen for the idea.
