Shree Pashupatinath [01:12]
Pashupatinath, the Lord of Animals, is among the oldest in the Hindu pantheon of gods and goddesses. Scientific findings prove that Lord God Shiva was worshipped in this form, among others, in the Indian subcontinent before the permanent settlement of the Aryans. Archaeological excavations at Mohenjodaro and Harappa in Pakistan prove that he was worshipped there in the second millennium BC. Pashupati is worshipped by Hindus from all over the world. In the beginning there may only have been a shrine there, but Pashupati had become a state deity by the seventh century. Dated sculptures and inscriptions proved that he worship place definitely existed by the fifth century. According to an old chronicle of Nepal, the temple was at once a five-story structure. The present two-story structure was built in the seventeenth century. The temple is square in shape. Many decorative and functional structures were added to it from time to time. The temple courtyard is full of shrines of various sized, and the whole area is a complex of statues and worship places. The temple has a sloping roof supported by wooden beams and struts. The struts are called toranas (meaning: "ankle bone" in Newari). In between these beautifully carved and highly decorative struts are screened windows. A golden pinnacle tops the temple. Hindu shrines face specific directions for specific gods. Bhairav faces south, Ganesh faces east, Narayan west, and the Nawadurgar (the nine mother goddesses) north. The ...

Buddha Statues Swayambhunath Stupa [00:57]
Monkeys play around the statues of Buddha at the entrance of the ancient religious temple of Swayambhunath in Kathmandu Nepal. The site has two access points, a long stairway, claimed to have 365 steps, leading directly to the main platform of the temple, which is from the top of the hill to the east; and a car road around the hill from the south leading to the southwest entrance Swayambhunath is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in parts of the temple in the north-west. The Tibetan name for the site means 'Sublime Trees' for the many varieties of trees found on the hill. However, Shing.kun may be a corruption of the local Newari name for the complex, Singgu, meaning 'self-sprung'.For the Buddhist Newars in whose mythological history and origin myth as well as day-to-day religious practice, Swayambhunath occupies a central position, it is probably the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. For Tibetans and followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it second only to Boudhanath. Nepal [02:25]
Exhausted from my arrival in Asia, I'm spending a big part of my first day here, sleeping. I also go for a little walk to explore the district of Thamel. Once more, I'm impressed by the chaotic and deafening traffic in this labyrinth of dusty streets. Among taxis, buses and rickshaws, people are making their way through. Throughout these narrow streets, they kiss and decorate with flowers statues of deities, under which mangy dogs, sacred cows and domestic roosters are lounging around. The smell of incense covers that of fumes. Above my head, an impressive amount of electric cables gets tangled up with the numerous signs bound for tourists. I fall in a hole. I smell poop. I'm going to bed. I get to know the family that has the inn a little better. The atmosphere here is convivial. Today, it's Shivaratri, a national holiday in honour of goddess Shiva. I'm entitled to a "tika", the pigment dot in the middle of the forehead. I personally find it nice and funny. If the lady paints it on me, is to bring me good luck, protection. Altogether, we're going to attend various celebrations, through temples in Durban Square. There's color everywhere, stamped by incense smoke, detailed sculptures, sometimes gigantic, scattered in every nook and cranny, trees embracing the temples on which they grow, women allegories of beauty, of gold, of pigments, guys who follow you for an hour to sell a flute... Yes, I had in mind beautiful images of Nepal. No, I was far from imagining how much ...
