Pashupatinath and the Holy River Bagmati [01:10]
The Bagmati River is a river of Nepal and India. It flows through the Kathmandu valley and is the river separating Kathmandu from Lalitpur. It is considered a holy river both by Hindus and Buddhists. A number of Hindu temples are located on the banks of this river. The importance of Bagmati also lies in the fact that Hindus are cremated on the banks of this holy river, and Kirants are buried in the hills by its side. According to the Nepalese Hindu tradition, the dead body must be dipped three times into the Bagmati river before cremation. The chief mourner (usually the first son) who lights the funeral pyre must take a holy river-water bath immediately after cremation. Many relatives who join the funeral procession also take a bath in the Bagmati River or sprinkle the holy water on their bodies at the end of cremation. The Bagmati River is considered to purify the people spiritually. The best place to watch Pashupati is from the hill opposite Aryaghat. One can see the temple, the activities on the ghat, and the Panchaderal complex. Many trees on this hill are not indigenous, but have been imported from as far away as Argentina. Pines and monkey puzzle trees help make the area attractive. A short climb from here takes one to the courtyards of Viswarupa, Gorakhnath, Tribhuwan Parameswar, and old shrine of Kirateswar, a shrine of Gauri, and the Kailas area where many Shava lingas, some of them more than 1400 years old, are scattered. Pashupati is one of the four most important religious sites in Asia for Shiva devotees. The Pashupatinath Temple is the largest Hindu temple and is considered to be the holiest of all Hindu Temples. This is a two-tiered golden temple with four silver doorways, hundreds of Shiva linga's shrines and holy symbols. It is located on the holy river Bagmati, 6 km east of Kathmandu . Non- Hindus are not allowed into this temple. It is believed that this temple was built long before the Christian era begin. The Pashupati Temple was built in the fifth century and later renovated by Malla kings, Its original beauty still remains with the beautifully sculpted stone sculptures found here. Located in a lovely little hill rock Swayambhunath Stupa middle of city is one of the most fascinating architectural jewels of the world. This great Stoup is said to have been built around 250 BC Generally a holy memorial site Stoup represents a typical Buddhist architecture. Its main feature the white dome is identified with a spotless pure jewel of Nirvana and a thirteen tiered golden spire in conical shape surmounted on the dome. Underneath this towering structure are a pair of all seeing eyes of Buddha painted on all four sides of the Stupa. The Stupa of Swayambhunath stands on a typically stylized lotus mandala base-a long time ago believed to have originated from a legendary lake of Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu is the capital of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal and headquarter centre of 14 administrative zones of Nepal. Not only is Kathmandu the economic hub of Nepal, it is the cultural and tourism capital of the country. The history of Nepal can be dated back to nearly 2000 years AD. The city is the nucleus of Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which includes two sister cities called Lalitpur and Bhaktapur/Bhadgaon. The Stupa of Swoyambhunath stands on a typically stylized lotus mandala base-a long time ago believed to have originated from a legendary lake of Kathmandu Valley. As the ancient legend goes Kathmandu Valley was a lake a long time ago. Right in the centre of this lake was a full blown lotus with the divine light a top. When Maha Manjushri a saint from China heard about this he came rushing all the way from China to the Valley. He cut through the southern wall hill of the valley with his divine sword. The cleft made by the sword immediately drained the entire lake water making the valley floor open for a close up view of the divine lotus light. This holy site in fact is the massive stupa complex ever built in Nepal. Hundreds of votive shrines and other historical monuments built in and around this stupa speak a lot about the significance and antiquity of this famed stupa. Wednesday(16-11-2011):- Finally did the ultimate "Adrenaline Junkie Jump" by "Bungy-Jumping at the "Last Resort" in Nepal .The "Last Resort" is located about 100 Kms from Kathmandu, approx a three hour journey by a long and winding road amidst hills and the Bhote Khosi river..Bhote Kosi river bungy jumping has been described as the 'ultimate experience' in Bungy jumping ranked amongst the 10 best in the World in 2012.The valley is narrow with steep hillsides towering over 2000 metres (6600 ft) from the river. The Last Resort is 160 metres (520 ft) above a gorge with the river raging below. It is 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from the Nepal-Tibet border.Bungee jumping at the Last Resort is one of the longest in the world. It is higher than the highest bungee in the New Zealand.[After leaping from the bridge platform, the bungee jumper has a free fall towards the river before the swing lines take up the tension and he enters a large, semicircular arc of about 240 metres (790 ft).When it opened in 1999, the Last Resort was amongst the highest suspension footbridges in the world.Swiss designed, especially for bungee jumping with a 4x safety factor, the bridge will hold 4.5 tonnes. Over 6000 metres (20000 ft) of steel wire was used to build the longest suspension bridge in Nepal.
