David Prowse, the English star who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars films, has actually died aged 85, his management company stated on Sunday.

Director George Lucas opted to dub another voice onto Prowse’s representation of the towering, masked villain Darth Vader in “Star Wars”, “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”.

Prowse was honoured by Queen Elizabeth in 2000 for services to charity and roadway safety after starring in a long running public campaign as a character called the Green Cross Code Guy who encouraged pedestrian road security.
