Kathmandu Zanko Newari Tribe

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to see Zanko, which is a rare celebration for a grandma who was celebrating her 90th birthday. It is very rare for a person to ge to that age in Nepal .This is a typical Newari tribe tradition. Newars are original inhabitants of Kathmandu. The whole day consists of pooja's (rituals) and after blessings from the priest they place the grandmother in a carriage and drag/carry through the city patan by temples in in the streets. Afterwards there is a huge celebration and party. We offered her presents of cloth for a dress, sandals, and scarfs. I was honored to experience such a terrific celebration and they treated me as family. Tomorrow the fligt to Ilam at the border. Go to www.seanburch.com for the expedition dispatches.
