Traffic Jam in Kathmandu, Nepal As Dashain Festival 2010 Approaches

For the first time in years, Nepalis felt it was safe to travel back to their home villages for the important Hindu festival of Dashain, since Maoist strikes and threats have virtually ceased. Between three big trucks broken down on the main road between Kathmandu and Chitwan National Park and the increased traffic from holiday travelers, what should have been no more than a five hour trip turned into ten hours. However, the approaching festival meant there were sights aplenty during the extended bus ride, including goats riding atop buses and trucks, destined to be slaughtered as sacrifices to the Gods to celebrate Dashain.
