Nepali Singer Rajesh Payal Rai
Considered to be one of the most popular playback singers in the Nepali movie industry, Rajesh Payal Rai has more than 300 film songs to his credit, with his folk, pop and contemporary songs estimated to be in the region of 700. Recognized at a young age for his extensive and melodious vocal talents, this Nepali singer has enjoyed a successful career for two decades now, and looks to the future with enthusiasm having overcome a very serious illness not too long ago. His recent tour in eastern Nepal was a resounding success, with thousands of fans turning out for every show. Regarding his performance in Beldangi, in Jhapa District, where an estimated 100,000 fans attended, the singer noted in a recent interview that it was one of the most memorable shows in his career in terms of crowd presence.
Often referred to as “Rai is King” Rajesh Payal Rai was raised in a remote village of the Khotang district. At the age of 14 he travelled to Kathmandu to take a voice test for Radio Nepal, passing with his first attempt and putting him on the path of a musical career. After completing his exams in Bhuipa, Rai moved to Dharan where he found many opportunities to further his budding career. His first album was Murchana, released in 2052 BS, with subsequent albums Purba Ma Rang Chadecha (2053 BS), Just For You (2054 BS), Love Letter (2055 BS), Baiguni Raichau Mayalu (2056 BS), Nigaha (2058 BS), Jadau (2061 BS), Kamana (2063 BS), and Jadau 2 released earlier this year.
In addition to composing music for nine films and dozens of songs, the singer has tried his hand at acting in the Bollywood movie Gundaraj. With the simultaneous release of four albums in April this year, Rai is aiming to take his place in the Guinness World Records. The four albums which may make this happen are a patriotic-themed album Made in Nepal, a contemporary album Murchana 2, a collection of folk songs Jadau 3, and a Limbu language album Aa Sewaro. No doubt fans of this popular Nepali singer wish him success in his future endeavors.
