Take a Guided Walk Through Thamel

With its network of narrow streets and cobbled alleyways, the Thamel district of Kathmandu is a fascinating place to explore on foot – and what better way to explore Nepal’s capital city than with someone who lives there. As part of their community-based social programs, the non-for-profit organization, Welcome To My Yard (WTMY), offers ‘Walk With Me’ tours of Durbar Square and Thamel where visitors have the opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of these colorful attractions, and learn interesting facts about Nepal’s history and culture, from the perspective of a local, while at the same time contributing financially toward skills training programs for young people with limited opportunities, many of whom have lived on the streets for years.

With the motto of “Involve, Inspire & Enable”, WTMY works with young people to facilitate multi-faceted community-based support, training, education and programs to generate income – one of which is the ‘Walk With Me’ tour initiative. The aptly named Rickshaw Café Project is another way WTMY assists young people to gain work experience and raise funds. This pedal-powered mobile café prepares Nepal’s finest coffees, brewed to perfection, and sell it to passers-by. The aim of the project is to assist young people with vocational training, work experience and the opportunity to work toward a bright future.

WTMY also provides basic medical care, including vaccinations, to these young people. Moreover, volunteers from all over the world are offered the opportunity to use their skills and enthusiasm to help with the organization’s various projects.

If you are planning to visit Kathmandu, be sure to add a ‘Walk With Me’ tour to your itinerary. You can choose from a one-an-a-half hour walk through Thamel, or a three-hour walk which includes Durbar Square. The tours start daily at 5pm and booking details are available on the Welcome To My Yard Website. Be prepared to be entertained and amazed by a wealth of information that will enrich your visit to Kathmandu.
