Embassy of the United Kingdom in Nepal

The Embassy of the United Kingdom in Nepal is located in Kathmandu. The ambassador to Nepal from the U.K. Embassy is Andrew Hall who took up his position in July 2006. His duties and that of the Embassy of the United Kingdom, is to uphold and maintain relations with Nepal and to promote the United Kingdom within Nepal. To achieve these goals, the U.K. Embassy has been divided into four offices that concentrate on their own individual tasks.

The divisions within the United Kingdom Embassy include: the Political Team that monitors and reports on the political status and situations in Nepal; the Consular and Visa Division that takes care of the interests of British citizens and travelers; and the Defense Division that maintains the defense relationship between Nepal and the United Kingdom. The Management Team takes on the responsibility of the staff at the embassy, the administration and financial aspects of the embassy and the maintenance of the embassy buildings.

The Consular Services provided by the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Nepal includes visa services, passport services, marriage documentation, birth registration, adoptions and emergency services. They advise all British citizens to obey the laws of Nepal, as they have very limited access and influence in regard to detainees or those who are arrested.

At present, the United Kingdom Embassy is warning British citizens to be vigilant and cautious while visiting Nepal, as recent events in parts of Nepal have raised concern. They advise tourists and visitors to contact their offices for a detailed update on the situation before making their travel arrangements. The Terai district is named as one of the areas that should be avoided as riots and civil unrest has plagued this area in recent months. British citizens are also recommended to keep their distance during demonstrations, as some have been known to turn violent. The Kathmandu area is one of the safer areas to travel in, and the Embassy of the United Kingdom will be able to supply travelers with details of the security risks is certain areas. Nepal is expecting and getting ready for more demonstrations as the 2007 election date draws nearer. It is also recommended that tourists join reputable trekking or travel companies, so as to ensure a safe and enjoyable time in Nepal. Customs and the culture of the country should be respected and woman are advised not to wear sleeveless shirts or shorts in certain public areas, as it might be found to be offensive and inappropriate by the local community.

The U.K. Embassy works to ensure the safety of its citizens and prides itself that it always has the latest and most recent event and political information available. Their offices can be contacted in regard to any concerns or queries.
